To do so, you have to remove the lignin, which is a gum-like substance holding the fibers together. Combing it out doesn’t work, which leaves one other option...“What we want to do is release, remove the majority of the lignin by washing it,” Carpenter said. “And there’s a dozen ways to do it, but some are more environmentally friendly than others. And one of the more environmentally friendly ways involves using enzymes. The enzymes relax the gum-glue itself and actually wash it away. It doesn’t get it all. It’s not the final answer, but it brings you 80 percent of the way to it. That’s what we’re doing here today. We’re running trials on different ways to get to that 80 percent.”
