Kenaf NoTill Cover Crop Experiment Notes

Notes:
  1. 11/24/16 1:00 PM- 11 Kenaf Seeds previously produced by the Plants grown in experiment 1, were placed directly on top of the soil. 2 Inch Cover Crop of leaves were placed over the seeds.  Water was added.
  2. 11/26/16  10:00 AM - 3 Kenaf Sprouts in less than 48 Hours were noticed to have grown out of the Cover Crop Mulch System.

Kenaf-Indian Hemp NoTill Cover Crop Experiment

MOhemp is preparing for another Kenaf growing experiment. This experiment will replicate no-till farming with cover crops.

Its winter time in Missouri and cold outside so this Kenaf growing experiment will be performed inside a acclimatized location of the office with pots and plant trays. Today, I brought the dirt and kenaf stems/leaves (that will be used to replicate cover crop farming) in from outside and will be letting it acclimate to room temperature (70 Deg F) before adding seeds.

The kenaf plants used for the Cover Crop were produced in the prior experiment 2016 this year. (Kenaf Plant Timeline Pictures)
(A portion of the seeds used in this growing experiment will be from the plants grown earlier this year.)

If as predicted, the seeds sprout and grow I will have verified my earlier claim that Kenaf will produce seeds that will grow in Midwest USA

Kenaf sprouts in 2-4 days so I will have information on the sprouts pretty quick. If they grow like the other plants have done. I predict the sprouts to have grow out of the cover crop mulch system in less than a week. At that time they will be receiving full sunlight and will grow into the 12 foot giants in a matter of months.

As a reminder for anyone reading this post. I am growing Kenaf because Hemp is illegal to grow in my state. Kenaf is also known as Indian Hemp in a few circles.

In the orient I see pictures of Kenaf growing 18 feet tall. Kenaf is a biomass energy champion that needs less water to grow than hemp as well.

Tap Root of a Kenaf Plant

This is the Tap Root of a Kenaf Plant that I pulled
out of the ground 11/21/16.  The Kenaf Plant was
dying from the cold temps of St Louis the past few
days.  Two days of the temperatures below 33 Deg F
at night is all it took.

Kenaf Plants are also called Indian Hemp by some people.

These photos were also highlighted at the Hemp
Environmental Forum and the Kenaf Community.

Additional Kenaf Growing Notes

  • The seeds were planted for this plant in midsummer 2016.
  • The plants were only hand watered twice due to dry conditions and it wasn't a weren't necessity.  I was just playing it on the safe side. After watering them one day it rained that night so I wasted water-aarrgh.
  • This particular Kenaf Plant was over 10 feet Tall at harvest time.
  • Normal Size Bic Lighter was used for scaling purposes

Update Lignin Removal Test Plants Photo

Growing Kenaf Test Plant Images from first planting Jan 2016 till Sept 2016

Two Sets of Test Plants are growing.  1 set started indoors, 2nd set planted in backyard garden.

As of Sept 18 the second set of plants is within 2 feet of acquiring the height the 1st set has reached.

This is a perfect example of Kenaf ability to produce clean energy from the plant biomass.

Here is a lesson I learned from this experiment: Don't plant anything under a roof edge that doesn't have a gutter to collect the water and keep it from downing and drowning the plant below.

Little Green Thumbs Helping with Kenaf Plants

The whole family is in awe and pleasantly surprised to see how fast the Kenaf plants have grown.  The Kids and I have been watching and monitoring the Kenaf Test Plants since they sprouted in January. The Kids grow almost as fast as the Kenaf 8234 plants.

Invention UPdate Lignin Test Plants and Robot Farming

Today was a pretty important date times 2, if you are following Scotts Contracting Lignin Removal Test Plants that will be used to test the Lignin Removal Invention.
Scotts Contracting Hemp and Kenaf Lignin Removal Invention

Scotty has been leaving a breadcrumb trail on this blog and its sister blog on the future aspects that will become an important aspect on not only the Inventions: BioRad Hazardous Waste Removal and Hemp Farming Machinery;  but also future business avenues that will be capitalized and turned into income producing avenues for the company and its shareholders.

Here is why today was a big deal as it relates to Missouri Agribusiness and Robotics (Breadcrumb 1Breadcrumb 2)  In a prior social media post I highlighted how Tree Planting robots are being used to plant trees.  It is not too much of a stretch of imagination, to see how similar Kenaf Seedlings are very similar to actual Trees check out today's Kenaf Test Plant Animated Images and see how fast these Kenaf Test Plants have come from the early days.
Lignin Removal Invention Test Plant Growth Images-transplant day

In a few days the transplant experiment will prove how hardy the Kenaf Plants are.  I'll be honest they have not had a luxurious life since they first sprouted in January 2016.  I have purposely let them grow in the little plant trays to demonstrate not only the hardiness of the Kenaf plant; but, also the how easily and carefree they grow.  This semi mimics how adaptable they will be to actual field growing conditions relative to Missouri's Climate.

I previously stated:

USE ROBOTS TO PLANT SEEDS FOR PHYTOREMEDIATION ON HAZMAT SOIL AND LAND.

This eliminates humans coming in contact with Nuclear Rads.  I really like this idea, as a business owner who will have to cover the health hazards of the crew while working on hazmat soils.

Feel free to contact Scotty by email or contact form about any information related to Investment opportunities for the Hemp and Kenaf Farm Machinery

Notes:
  1. Cardboard cylinder is a toilet paper roll center that is used to hold the plants upright.  The plants are not exactly growing in optimum conditions in the widow sill.  The stems of the plants do not get the wind that is needed to strengthen the plant stem and the weight of the leaves bends the stems over.
  2. A quarter was used for size reference early in the plants growth.

  3. The Red Colored lights are not from a Red Grow Light, this was caused by a camera setting in a few photos.
  4. I planted 6 seeds- 5 sprouted.  I killed 1 attempting to help it rid the seed pod.  I ripped the tender leaves and that plant never recovered and died.  (Don't love your plants to death- Paul Allen
  5. The majority of the photos are taken in the AM when I am getting a cup of coffee to start the day.
  6. This is also when I turn the supplemental lighting on.
  7. Supplemental lighting is generally left on a minimum of 12 hours a day, 7 am to 7 pm.
  8. The Grand-kids are marveling at how fast the Kenaf Plants grow (and so am I).  I told the middle child that they will eventually grow taller than us.  They could grow up-to 15 feet tall, which is 4 times as tall as you right now. (Note to self: she doesn't know how tall 15 feet is.  I have to do a better job of comparison)
  9. She also asked, "if we are going to eat these plants?"  I replied, "I don't know I guess we could, I've heard of other people eating Kenaf plants.  And read that Kenaf Growers feed the plants to their farm animals."
  10. Occasionally, as the Temperature warms the plant tray is taken outside and placed on the Patio so the plants get Natural Sunlight.  I hope to also strengthen the stems by doing this with the natural breeze.
  11. I am planning on re-potting the plant starts into bigger pots soon.

Thank You for stopping by-Share and Comment below.  If additional information in needed or you have a question let me know.  Together we can make a difference and create a future that will benefit everyone.

Keep them warm Scotty!
You have a heat pad for seeds? Maybe around 85 degrees. They will grow faster,,,,,

Thanks. I grew mine in summer they sprouted and grew so fast they freaked me out. LOL

Even though this is a window located on the South Side of the House and other plants have flourished in this location.  I didn't feel the plants were getting enough lighting and added a Florescent Grow Light to the area for an additional boost.
